Struck while Harun al‑Rashid ruled and his son Muhammad held the title al‑Amin as heir, this issue publicizes the succession and, by naming Ja‘far, reflects the prominence of the Barmakid administration prior to its fall in 187 AH (803). The mint name al‑Muhammadiya identifies Rayy in Jibal, a key Abbasid provincial center. The precise AH 181 date anchors the coin to the mature phase of Harun’s reign and to the period of coordinated propaganda across the dirham currency.
