Description
Caracalla, Denarius, silver, reign AD 198–217, Rome mint, struck AD 215; 3.20 g, 19 mm. Laureate bust right with legend ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM. Reverse depicting Jupiter standing right, nude, holding thunderbolt in right hand and sceptre in left; legend P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P. Centered strike on a compact flan with complete legends; small flan fissure at 6 o’clock. Cited: RIC IV Caracalla 258c.
Struck in Caracalla’s tribunician year XVIII (AD 214/215), this issue advertises his titles after the German campaign of 213 (GERM) and lists his offices—pontifex maximus, tribunician power XVIII, fourth consulship, and father of the state—fixing the date and status of his rule. The choice of Jupiter Tonans underscores divine sanction for his ongoing military policy as he prepared for war against Parthia, and the year is traditionally associated with the introduction of the antoninianus, placing this denarius within a transitional phase of Roman silver coinage.
