Description
Nero, Tetradrachm, reign AD 54–68, Alexandria, struck AD 64–65 (regnal year 11), 13.30 g, 25 mm. Obv: ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ; radiate bust of Nero right, wearing aegis. Rev: ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ, L ΙΑ; eagle standing left with palm branch. Struck on a broad Alexandrian flan with typical fabric; central devices complete with minor peripheral flatness; die axis about 12h. Ref: RPC I 5283. Issued within Roman Egypt’s closed monetary system, this dated tetradrachm records Nero’s regnal year 11 (L IA = AD 64/65). The Greek legends and the eagle with palm continue Hellenistic conventions inherited from the Ptolemies, while the imperial portrait and title “Autokrator” assert Roman authority over the province governed by a prefect. The series provides securely dated evidence for Alexandrian mint production and the billon standard that anchored Egypt’s local economy under Nero.
