Description

Middle Danube, uncertain tribe, Tetradrachm, silver, 4th century BC, 12.40 g, 24 mm. Anepigraphic; Celticized laureate head of Zeus right. Reverse anepigraphic; Pegasos left, pellet below tail. Struck at an uncertain tribal mint in the Middle Danube region on a broad flan with centrally aligned dies. Extremely rare Pegasos variety. For type, see OTA 191/3; Lanz 461.

This issue belongs to the earliest phase of eastern Celtic coinage in the Middle Danube, when local groups adopted and recombined Greek motifs for high-value silver currency used in regional and long-distance trade. The pairing of a Zeus head with Pegasos reflects influence from Macedonian and Corinthian prototypes, while the absence of legends and the pellet control mark are characteristic of tribal production. Finds of such tetradrachms across the Danube and Carpathian basin indicate their role in the monetary economy of the eastern Celts during the late 4th century BC.
