Description
Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–2nd century AD. Intaglio in Heliotrope (Bloodstone). An oval gem engraved with the bust of a male figure in profile to left, wearing a crested helmet and drapery at the shoulder. The carving is bold and somewhat schematic, with strong linear strokes used to render the plume and beard. The dark green heliotrope, enlivened by natural red flecking, gives the intaglio a vivid and attractive presence. Though simpler in execution than more elaborate works, gems of this type were functional as signets while also serving an apotropaic and symbolic role, evoking martial virtues of strength and protection. Dimensions: 14 × 10 mm Condition: Fine, the engraving still clear with scattered surface wear and deposits; natural inclusions well visible. Provenance: From a European private collection.
