Description
Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–2nd century AD. Intaglio in Heliotrope (Bloodstone). An oval gem finely engraved with the bust of a philosopher or bearded intellectual, shown draped and in profile to right. His hair is arranged in thick, stylized locks, with a full curling beard emphasizing wisdom and gravitas. The cutting is executed with crisp linear strokes, lending strength and dignity to the portrait. The natural heliotrope matrix, a rich green speckled with red inclusions, enhances the gem’s striking visual presence. Such engraved stones were valued not only as personal seals, but also as symbols of cultural refinement and philosophical aspiration within the Roman elite. Dimensions: 16 × 12 mm Condition: Very fine, with attractive surface polish and scattered deposits; the engraving sharp and expressive. Provenance: From a European private collection.
