Description

Hermaios Soter & Kalliope, Tetradrachm, Silver, reign c. 120–90 BC, struck 105 BC, 9.21 g, 27 mm. Paropamisadai or Gandhara mint. Obv: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΕΡΜΑΙΟΥ KAI ΚΑΛΛΙΟΠΗΣ; conjugate busts right, Hermaios diademed and draped, Kalliope draped wearing stephane. Rev: MAHARAJASA TRATARASA HIRAMAYASA KALIYAPAYA; Hermaios on horse rearing right, bow in bowcase and spear attached to saddle; monogram in lower right field. Struck on a broad flan, obverse legend largely complete; reverse a touch off center with peripheral softness. Bopearachchi 1A; HGC 12, 287. This bilingual issue reflects the Indo-Greek administration of the Kabul–Paropamisadai region, pairing a Greek legend with a Kharosthi rendering of “Maharaja, the Saviour, Hermaios and Kalliope.” The mounted king type underscores the cavalry-based warfare of the frontier kingdoms, while the naming of Kalliope—known only from coinage—documents a royal consort otherwise unattested. Hermaios’ coinage became a model for early Kushan imitations, marking a numismatic bridge from Hellenistic to Kushan authority in northwestern South Asia.
