Description
Elagabalus, denarius, silver, reign 218–222, struck at Rome 219–220; 3.12 g; 19 mm. Obv: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate and draped bust right. Rev: PAX AVGVSTI, Pax advancing left, holding branch and scepter. Struck on a well-centered flan with full legends and typical Severan fabric. Reference: RIC IV Elagabalus 125. Issued soon after Elagabalus secured power following the fall of Macrinus, this PAX AVGVSTI type promoted the regime’s claim of restored stability while the young emperor adopted the Antonine name to associate himself with Caracalla. The coinage of this period reflects ongoing Severan monetary debasement, and Rome’s mint produced large numbers of denarii with conventional deities such as Pax to reinforce continuity amid religious innovations introduced from Emesa.
