Description
Titus, Denarius, silver, reign AD 79–81, struck AD 79–81 at Rome, 3.28 g, 18 mm. Obverse: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M; laureate bust right. Reverse: TR P VIIII IMP XV COS VII P P; Venus standing right, resting on column, holding helmet and spear. Struck at Rome on the standard denarius module with beaded borders. Reference: RIC II, Part 1 (2nd ed.) Titus 51. Issued early in Titus’s short reign, this denarius combines his titulature with a Venus Victrix type long favored by Roman rulers to signal divine support for military success. The years 79–81 saw major events of the Flavian era, including disaster relief after Vesuvius and the dedication of the Colosseum; types such as Venus reinforced the message of stability and victory under the new emperor.
