Description
Idalion, Cyprus, Tetrobol, silver, circa 500–490 BC, 3.43g, 18 mm. Anepigraphic; sphinx seated right, left foreleg raised. Reverse with rough incuse square produced by a deep punch. Struck at Idalion on the Cypriot-Persian weight standard; archaic style on an irregular flan, as characteristic for the early series. Rare. References: BMC 1, pl. V, 1; Asyut 777. Issued by the city-kingdom of Idalion under Achaemenid hegemony, this early Cypriot stater belongs to one of the island’s first silver coinages. The sphinx, a protective emblem common in Cypriot and Near Eastern art, reflects the blend of Greek and Levantine iconography that marked Cypriot culture in the late Archaic period. The Asyut hoard evidence fixes the type to the opening decades of the 5th century BC, illustrating Cyprus’s integration into Persian imperial and eastern Mediterranean trade networks.
