Description

SICILY. Solus, circa 400–350 BC. Æ (15 mm, 1.84 g). Facing head of Athena, wearing crested Corinthian helmet. Rev. Archer kneeling right, drawing bow. Calciati I, p. 310, 5. CNG 54, 6/14/2000 Lot 330

A rare and attractive bronze issue from the small Sicilian city of Solus, struck during the late Classical period. The obverse presents a striking facing head of Athena, her helmet finely crested and symbolic of martial strength and divine guardianship. On the reverse, a kneeling archer—an uncommon motif in Sicilian bronzes—evokes the military traditions and external influences shaping the region in an age of conflict between Carthage and the Greek poleis. The artistry and iconography suggest a civic pride that belied the city’s modest size, reflecting both Hellenic and local elements. With pleasing green patina and strong detail on both sides.
