Septimius Severus — Denarius, P M TR P XIIII COS III, Rome
Lot 647 · Consigned by Numis-Lens
Closed
Description
Struck at Rome in AD 206. Severus was in his fourteenth year of tribunician power and had four left to live, most of them spent on the British campaign that killed him at York.
The obverse has shortened to SEVERVS PIVS AVG over a laureate head right, dropping the Pertinax name he no longer needed. P M TR P XIIII COS III P P dates the reverse. Genius stands left, naked, pouring from a patera over a garlanded and lighted altar with corn ears in his left hand.

Attributions are my own, made from the references listed. Ancient coins are not always
straightforward, and a reference can turn out to be wrong or open to argument, so please
study the photographs. They are part of the description, and if you read the coin
differently I would like to know.
