Description

Up for sale is a beautiful, historically fascinating Silver Drachm (Siglos) from the ancient Greek city of Sinope in Paphlagonia, dating to the late 4th Century BC (circa 350-300 BC). Struck on the Persic weight standard, the obverse features a lovely, classical profile of the nymph Sinope facing left, her hair elegantly bound in a cloth sakkos. The exceptionally sharp reverse depicts the city's famous maritime motif: a sea-eagle with outspread wings perched atop a dolphin swimming left. The ethnic inscription ΣΙΝΩ (SINO) is clearly legible beneath the dolphin, while the magistrate's initials ΠΟΣ (POS) are crisply struck above the eagle's wing. This genuine piece of ancient history exhibits a handsome, deep silver patina and features a clean, ancient test cut on the obverse edge—a classic testament to the coin's real-world circulation and verification in the ancient marketplace.
