Gallienus AD 253-268 - Heavy Early Silver Antoninianus - PIETAS AVGG

Gallienus AD 253-268 - Heavy Early Silver Antoninianus - PIETAS AVGG

Beautiful early issue of Gallienus struck while co-emperor with his father Valerian, before the great debasement.

AR Antoninianus, 3.8g, 21mm, Rome mint, AD 253-255

Obv: IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, excellent portrait with full legend.

Rev: PIETAS AVGG, Valerian and Gallienus standing facing, sacrificing over lighted altar between them.

Ref: RIC V-1 29, RSC 580. Good silver, heavy flan, well centered, VF. Much better metal than the later sole-reign billon issues.

A great historical type showing father and son together, just a few years before Valerian's capture by Shapur I.
