Description
Valens, Siliqua, AR, reign from 364-378, minted in Antioch. Weight: 1.92g, Diameter: 18mm. The obverse features a diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valens facing right with the inscription "D N VALENS P F AVG" encircling the image. The reverse displays the legend "VOT X MVLT XX" within a wreath, symbolizing vows (vota) for ten years and more extended vows for twenty years. This example has a crisp strike with well-defined details on both sides, typical of the artistry from the Antioch mint. It corresponds to the reference RIC IX Antioch 34B: Subtype 10.
The issuance of this coin during the reign of Valens represents a significant period in the late Roman Empire characterized by internal and external challenges. Valens, serving as Eastern Roman Emperor, faced ongoing frontier pressures, notably the Gothic Wars, which culminated in the catastrophic Battle of Adrianople in 378. This event underscored the vulnerabilities of the Roman military system and presaged broader transformations within the empire, including eventual administrative and military reforms. The coin serves as a tangible remnant of Valens' authority and the fiscal continuities that persisted within the empire despite such tumultuous times.
