Description

Demetrios II Nicator, AR Tetradrachm, struck during the first reign of Demetrios II from 146-138 BC in Antioch on the Orontes. Silver, with a typical weight of 5.44 grams and a diameter of 19 mm. The obverse features a laureate head of Apollo facing right, characterized by finely detailed hair and facial features typical of Hellenistic portraiture. On the reverse, the legend reads BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔHMHTPIOY ΘEOY ΦIΛAΔEΛΦOY NIKATOPOΣ, translated as "Of King Demetrios, God, Brother-loving, Victor," surrounding a central illustration intricately depicting a deity or emblem symbolizing royal power and divinity. Known catalog references include SC 1913-1918.

Demetrios II Nicator's first reign was marked by his assertion of power amid the longstanding tumult of the Seleucid Empire, which faced challenges both internally and from rival Hellenistic states. His coins are emblematic of a period where Hellenistic kingship emphasized divine favor and dynastic loyalty, noted in the titles 'Theos' (God) and 'Philadelphos' (Brother-loving) on the coinage propagating his rule. His reign was further characterized by ongoing conflicts and efforts to regain lost territories, a testament to the continuous political instability of the era.
