Description

Sequani (Besançon), denarius, silver, reign 57-50 BC, minted 57-50 BC, weight 3.80 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: Celticised head of Roma facing left, stylised hair and helmet detail; surrounding garbled legend SEQVANOIOTVOS. Reverse: Horse galloping left, tail streaming; no exergual inscription; fields otherwise plain. Strike: hammered on small, slightly irregular flan, typical minor off-centre alignment. Toning: light grey surfaces with darker peripheral toning. References: LT.5351; DT 3243; ABT 419; RIG 260; rarity noted in “Link”. Silver denarii of the Sequani tribe were issued during the late Gallic Wars, reflecting Roman monetary influence on Celtic communities east of the Saône River. The type copies the Roman Republican Roma-and-horse design but adapts it with local artistry and legends in Gaulish script, indicating partial acculturation while asserting regional identity. Besançon, the principal settlement of the Sequani, served as a strategic minting centre amid intensified trade and military activity preceding Caesar’s conquest. These coins circulated alongside Roman issues, facilitated payment of mercenaries and tribute, and provide numismatic evidence for the tribe’s economic integration and political autonomy during 57-50 BC.
