Description

Up for sale is an incredibly rare, historically significant Roman Imperial Silver Denarius struck during the famous "Year of the Six Emperors" (AD 238) under the brief 22-day co-reign of Gordian II Africanus. The obverse showcases a remarkably sharp, laureate, draped, and cuirassed portrait of the emperor facing right, showcasing his highly distinct, naturally bald forehead line used by the mint to separate him from his father. The bold obverse legend IMP M ANT GORDIANVS AFR AVG is beautifully preserved and fully legible. The reverse features Providentia standing left, leaning on a column, holding a cornucopia and a wand pointing to a globe, surrounded by the clear legend PROVIDENTIA AVG. This genuine example boasts a gorgeous, deep-grey old collection patina with highly detailed features. While the coin exhibits two honest, ancient minting flan splits at the edges, the portrait remains completely unmarred and beautifully centered, offering a premier opportunity to fill one of the toughest portrait slots in the entire Roman Imperial series.
