Description

Seleukos I Nicator, municipal bronze issue, bronze, reign 305-281 BC, struck 300-281 BC, weight 6.50 g, diameter 19 mm. Obverse: laureate and bearded head of Zeus facing right; ethnic legend ΣΕΛΕΥΚΕΩΝ around. Reverse: wingless thunderbolt; below, monogram. Strike: well-centered on a slightly irregular flan with medium relief detail. Toning: dark green patina with lighter earthen deposits in recesses. References: HGC 9, 1385; WSM 894. This bronze was produced at Seleucia Pieria, the principal port city of the early Seleucid kingdom founded by Seleukos I. The coinage promoted both civic identity—shown by the ethnic legend—and dynastic ideology through the portrait of Zeus, a deity closely associated with Seleukos’s rule. Wingless thunderbolt types are characteristic of early Seleucid bronzes and reflect local stylistic preferences before later standardization. Municipal bronzes such as this circulated widely in daily transactions within northern Syria and adjoining territories, illustrating the administrative reach and economic integration achieved by the nascent Seleucid state during the closing years of Seleukos’s reign.
