Mongols. Ilkhanids. Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad (?). AH 703-716

Islamic, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad Khudabanda Öljeytü, AH 703-716 / AD 1304-1316. Fals (Bronze, 1.1g, 14mm) Sunface type, Mardin (?) (Turkey)

Arabic title: المغول – الإيلخانيون، غياث الدين محمد (؟)، 703–716 هـ

Obv: Sun in the form of a face, surrounded by rays and pellets

Rev: 'Sultan' in center

Ref: Album 2190 (var., reverse inscription)

Note: The coin’s crude fabric and limited script make its attribution somewhat ambiguous. However, the distinctive sun motif is clearly identifiable and has been referenced as most consistent with issues of the Mongol Ilkhanids, likely struck at Mardin. The calligraphy of al-sulṭān most plausibly refers to Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad. Overall, it appears to be a very rare small denomination that has not been documented in the major numismatic references.
