Mamluks. al-Nasir Nasir al-Din Faraj, Halab (Aleppo) mint. Undated

Islamic, Mamluks. al-Nasir Nasir al-Din Faraj, AH 801-808, 808-815 / AD 1399-1405, 1405-1412. Fals (Bronze, 2.5g, 17mm), Halab, undated.

Arabic title: المماليك، الناصر ناصر الدين فرج، دار ضرب حلب، غير مؤرخ

Obv: Fleur-de-lis within a circle

Rev: ‘al-malik al-Nāṣir’ (‘King al-Nasir’ in Arabic) within circle

Ref: Album 981. Zeno-187592

Note: Very rare clearly stating Halab. Struck in Halab under al-Nasir Faraj, this issue belongs to a turbulent era marked by internal strife and the looming threat of Timur. The fleur-de-lis motif is strikingly non-traditional for Islamic coinage, hinting at cross-cultural artistic influences in late Mamluk Syria.
