Description

Trebonianus Gallus, Antoninianus, silver, reign 251-253, minted 251-253, weight 3.40 g, diameter 23 mm. Obverse: legend IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS AVG; radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right; die axis about 6 h. Reverse: legend LIBERTAS PVBLICA; Libertas standing left holding pileus in right hand and transverse sceptre in left; ground line visible. Strike: generally well-centred on slightly irregular flan, moderate relief with occasional die wear. Toning: light grey with scattered golden or bluish highlights. References: RIC IV 50; Cohen 48; Sear 9635. Issued at Rome during the short reign of Trebonianus Gallus, this antoninianus belongs to the emergency coinage struck after the deaths of Decius and Herennius Etruscus in the Gothic wars. The type LIBERTAS PVBLICA aimed to reinforce confidence in imperial authority by invoking the traditional concept of civic freedom at a time when the empire was coping with renewed barbarian incursions and the ongoing Cyprian plague. The piece illustrates the steady decline in silver content typical of mid-third-century issues and reflects the fiscal demands of maintaining frontier armies and public order during a period of political and military instability.
