Description

Antiochos II Theos Tetradrachm, Silver, Reign of Antiochos II Theos (361-246 BC), Minted in Seleukeia on the Tigris. Weight: 16.96g, Diameter: 32mm. The obverse features the diademed head of Antiochos I facing right, showcasing refined details and high relief. This coin is struck with precision, demonstrating clear imagery and an excellent alignment. It corresponds with reference SC-587.1c. Antiochos II Theos, known as "Theos" or "God," was a Hellenistic ruler of the Seleucid Empire, which stretched across the Near East. His reign marked significant territorial expansions and political alliances, notably through the marriage to Berenice, daughter of the Ptolemaic king in Egypt, which temporarily expanded Antiochos' influence into those territories. This tetradrachm reflects both the artistic and political values of his regime, portraying the divine imagery and reinforcing the authority of the ruling dynasty in their domain.
