Description

Ptolemy III Euergetes, Triobol/Hemidrachm, AE, reign 246-222 BC, minted in Alexandria. Weight: 33.16g; Typical Diameter: 28mm. The obverse features a striking depiction of Zeus-Ammon facing right, showcasing the syncretism typical in Ptolemaic coins by integrating Greek and Egyptian deities. The reverse inscription reads ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, translating to "of King Ptolemy," neatly encompassing the deity's radiate head. The coin is referenced as Svoronos 1128. The strike shows moderate wear, indicative of circulation, with elements of the art and lettering still discernible. The reign of Ptolemy III Euergetes marked a period of expansion and prosperity for the Ptolemaic Kingdom. During his rule, he maintained and extended his father’s policies, consolidating power across the Eastern Mediterranean. The coin exemplifies Hellenistic royal imagery, with the fusion of Greek and local Egyptian religious iconography. These coins not only served economic purposes but also propagated the image of the ruler as both a god-like figure and a political leader.
