Description
Ephesos, Ionia, Cistophoric Tetradrachm, AR, 68-67 BC, minted in Ephesos, 12.64g, typical diameter 26mm. The obverse features a cista mystica, represented as a basket with a half-open lid, from which a snake emerges, encircled by an ivy wreath adorned with fruits. The reverse depicts two snakes intertwining around a bow case, which is embellished with an aplustre, positioned between the snake heads. The strike is well-centered with sharp details evident on both the cista mystica and the decorative elements of the reverse. Referenced as Kleiner, Year 67. This cistophoric tetradrachm holds historical significance as it represents the wealth and religious symbolism of Ephesos during the late Hellenistic period. The depiction of the cista mystica reflects the mysteries associated with the cult of Dionysus, emphasizing the city's role as a religious center. Ephesos was a significant hub of commerce and culture in Ionia, and coins like this one were crucial in facilitating trade across the Hellenistic world. The iconography on the coin underscores the syncretic nature of religious and cultural expressions in ancient Ionia.
