The obverse features a diademed and draped bust of Ptolemy I facing right, exhibiting finely detailed hair and facial features typical of the period. The reverse displays the inscription "ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ" surrounding an eagle standing on a thunderbolt, a recognized symbol of Ptolemaic power. The strike is well-centered on both sides with evidence of light circulation wear, consistent with coins from this era. Reference: Svoronos 1855. Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysios, also known as Auletes, ruled Egypt during a turbulent period marked by internal strife and a delicate balance with Rome. His reign reflects the declining power of the Ptolemaic dynasty, yet his coinage remains an important symbol of his legitimate claim to the throne. Coins of Ptolemy XII often depict earlier dynasty figures, reinforcing the continuity and divine right of his rule, as exemplified by the portrayal of Ptolemy I on this tetradrachm.
