Manuel I Komnenos (AD 1143–1180) AE Tetarteron Thessalonica

Lot 814 · Consigned by Tacitus

Hammer price $50.00

Description

A very sharp looking Manuel I Komnenos Tetarteron. These copper "fractional" coins are often found in pretty rough shape—over-struck, clipped, or heavily corroded—so seeing one with this level of detail on the reverse cross is always a treat.

The strike is remarkably centered for the type. The facial features of Manuel are visible, and the reverse cross is exceptionally crisp. The flan is slightly irregular, which is standard for the 12th-century Thessalonica mint, but the deep, dark chocolate-brown patina is very attractive.

Manuel I was the last great emperor of the Komnenian Restoration, known for his ambitious attempts to restore the Roman Empire to its former glory.

Cross crosslet set on three steps; IC - XC in the upper fields. Note the sharp, "radiant" engraving at the top of the cross—a beautiful stylistic variety.
