Pamphylia, Perge AE (9.20g, 24.9mm) Julia Mamaea (Augusta) under Severus Alexander (222-235)

Obv: ΙΟΥΛ ΜΑΜΕΑ ϹΕΒ; draped bust of Julia Mamaea, right

Rev: ΠΕΡΓΑΙΩΝ; Artemis standing facing, head right, crescent on head, holding arrow and bow

Unpublished in standard references

An apparently unpublished and exceptionally rare issue of Perge, unknown to the Roman Provincial Coinage project and never recorded in the acsearch database. This remarkable absence from both scholarly and commercial records underscores the coin’s considerable rarity.

The type is closely related to RPC VI, temporary no. 6155; however, the present specimen differs in several decisive respects. On the obverse of the RPC-listed type, Julia Mamaea is shown draped and wearing a crescent on the shoulders, and a star appears in the field. By contrast, the present coin displays a simple draped bust without crescent on the shoulders and without star. Furthermore, at 9.20 g, this example is approximately twice the weight of the RPC specimen, suggesting a distinct and previously unrecognized emission rather than a minor die variant.

Such substantial iconographic and metrological differences strongly support the conclusion that this is an independent and unpublished variety within the Pergene civic coinage under Severus Alexander.

The state of preservation fully permits confident identification. The legend is partially reconstructed, yet the restoration is secure and supported by clear surviving letter traces. The surfaces are covered with a dark patina; numerous microscopic pits give the fields a slightly porous appearance typical of ancient bronze. Despite these minor surface characteristics, the types remain clear and well defined.

A highly important and seemingly unrecorded provincial bronze of Julia Mamaea from Perge — a coin of notable rarity and strong scholarly interest, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire a previously undocumented variety.
