Description

Danube or Pannonian Celts, Obol, Gold, 3rd-2nd Century BC. Weight: 0.83g, Diameter: 10mm. The obverse features the bust of Apollo facing right, though due to Celtic stylization, identification remains speculative. The reverse depicts Nike standing left, holding a wreath, executed in a minimalist and abstract style characteristic of the period. The coin exhibits a strong and clear strike with crisp details, especially on the reverse. References are unpublished, adding to the exclusivity and intrigue of this specimen.

This Celtic gold obol exemplifies the cross-cultural interactions in the Danube and Pannonian regions during the late Iron Age. At a time when Greek cultural influence pervaded Europe, local Celtic tribes adopted and adapted Hellenistic motifs such as Apollo and Nike, integrating these classical elements into their own distinct artistic expressions. The presence of only two known examples, both from the same dies, underscores the rarity and historical importance of this piece in illustrating the diffusion of ideas and artistic styles across ancient Europe.
