Description

Vasishka, Dinar, Gold, c. 247-265, Uncertain mint. Weight: 7.98g; Diameter: 20mm. The obverse features a nimbate and crowned king standing facing, head to the left, holding a trident while his right hand lowers to an altar with a second trident depicted above. The reverse presents the goddess Ardoksho enthroned facing. The coin exhibits a precise strike and is catalogued as Göbl 563. This dinar from the reign of Kushan ruler Vasishka highlights the period's cultural syncretism, combining Indian iconography with Hellenistic influences. Vasishka’s period marked continued prosperity and cultural flourishing in the Kushan Empire, a central hub for trade along the Silk Road. Coins like these not only served as a medium of exchange but also as tools of royal propaganda, projecting the divine authority and religious affiliation of the ruler to a diverse populace.
