Description
Vologases III, Drachm, AR, Reign of Vologases III (105-147 AD), Ecbatana Mint. Weight: 3.75 g, Diameter: 18 mm. The obverse features the diademed and draped bust of Vologases III facing left, wearing a long beard and earring, depicted with fine detail exemplifying the regal portrayal characteristic of Parthian artistry. The reverse depicts Arsakes I, the Parthian archer, seated right on a throne, holding a bow, with a monogram situated below the bow. This drachm is referenced in Sellwood as type 78.4. The strike is consistent with issues from Ecbatana, revealing moderate centering, and preserving prominent elements on both facings.
Vologases III's reign was pivotal in Parthian history, marked by internal consolidation and defence against incursions from neighboring powers such as Rome and the nomadic tribes. Under Vologases III, the Parthian Empire maintained its resilience and reflected a continuance of the Arsacid tradition, as symbolized by the reverse design of Arsakes I. This coin hence not only represents the economic exchanges of the era but also serves as a testament to the enduring iconography and political narratives of the Parthian monarchical system.
