Description

Nerva. AD 96–98. AR Denarius (18 mm, 3.20 g, 12 h). Rome, AD 96. Obv. IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS II P P, laureate head of Nerva right. Rev. CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM, clasped right hands. BMC 6; CBN 3; Cohen 16; RIC 2. Lightly toned. Minor scratches on the obverse, otherwise very fine. Provenance: From the collection of Kurt Zimmermann (1937–2025), Winterthur, long-serving numismatist at Schweizerische Kreditanstalt and Leu Numismatik; privately acquired from J. Malter in May 1974. Struck at the very beginning of Nerva’s brief reign, this denarius carries one of the most explicit political messages of the early Principate.

The reverse legend CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM proclaims harmony with the armies, a theme of pressing importance after the assassination of Domitian and the uncertain loyalty of the Praetorian Guard and frontier legions. The simple yet forceful motif of clasped hands translates this message into a universally intelligible symbol of agreement and reconciliation. The obverse portrait shows Nerva in a sober, unadorned style that contrasts sharply with the more assertive imagery of his predecessor, reinforcing the image of a principled and conciliatory ruler. Coins of this type formed part of a carefully calibrated program to stabilize the regime and reassure both the military and the Senate during a moment of political fragility. A well preserved and historically resonant example of Nerva’s earliest silver coinage, further distinguished by its long documented provenance to a respected Swiss numismatist.
