Description

Septimius Severus, struck at Rome in 202 CE during his reign of 193-211. Weight 3.29 g, diameter 19 mm. Obverse legend SEVERVS PIVS AVG surrounds a laureate head facing right, rendered in high relief with fine hair detail and a well-centered strike. Reverse legend VICT PART MAX depicts Victory walking left, extending a wreath in her right hand and carrying a palm branch over her left shoulder, symbolising triumph over Parthia. Surfaces display light cabinet toning with pale gold highlights in recessed areas and minimal die wear. Reference: RIC IV Septimius Severus 295 (denarius).

Issued to commemorate Severus's successful campaigns against the Parthians and the conquest of Ctesiphon in 198, the type proclaimed the emperor's title “Parthicus Maximus” to the Roman populace and army. The imagery of Victory reinforced his legitimacy during ongoing power consolidation and foreshadowed continued eastern ambitions that shaped Severan foreign policy.
