Struck for the Ludi Saeculares of AD 248, celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Rome (traditionally dated to 753 BC). Philip I marked this rare millennial Saecular Games with an extensive commemorative coinage featuring animals associated with the spectacles, the stag symbolizing renewal, abundance, and the dawning of a new age.
Philip I, known as “the Arab,” rose from equestrian origins in Arabia to the imperial throne following the death of Gordian III. His reign was defined by efforts to project stability and continuity amid mounting frontier pressures, with the millennial games serving as a powerful assertion of Rome’s eternal destiny and the legitimacy of his dynasty.
