Description

Greek IONIA, Miletus. AR Obol. Late 6th–5th Century BC

Small silver obol from the influential Ionian city of Miletus during the Archaic–Classical transition.

Obverse: Lion’s head right, jaws open—longstanding civic badge of Miletus symbolizing strength and the city’s ancient lineage.

Reverse: Stellate or floral pattern within a deeply sunk incuse square, characteristic of early Milesian silver.

Struck during the period of Ionian prosperity and Persian overlordship, these fractional coins circulated widely throughout the Aegean and reflect Miletus’ role as a major commercial and cultural center.
