Description
Nero, denarius, AR, reign AD 54–68; Rome mint, AD 64–65. 2.71 g, 18 mm. Obverse: NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS, laureate head of Nero right. Reverse: IVPPITER CVSTOS, Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre. Well-centred strike with clear legends and full principal devices. Reference: RIC I (2nd ed.) Nero 53.
Struck in the aftermath of the Great Fire of Rome (AD 64) and during a period of increasing political tension, this issue employs the type IVPPITER CVSTOS (“Jupiter the Protector”) to associate the emperor’s rule with the safeguarding authority of Jupiter, the chief Roman deity, reinforcing claims to divine protection and public stability in the later years of Nero’s reign.
