Description
SELEUCIS & PIERIA, Seleukeia Pieria. “Adelphoi Demi” alliance issue. Æ 21 mm (6.01 g, 3 h). Dated Seleucid Era 164 = 149/8 BC. Laureate head of Zeus r. Winged thunderbolt within wreath; above, ΑΔΕΛΦΩΝ; below, monogram in r. field ΔΞΡ (= 164 SE) and additional monogram. BMC Galatia p. 151, 1 (as Antioch); HGC 9, 1396 (Seleukeia Pieria). Deep olive and reddish-brown patina, lightly rough surfaces yet clear legends; Near Very Fine and rare.
The enigmatic legend ΑΔΕΛΦΩΝ ΔΗΜΩΝ (“of the Brother Peoples”) once inspired a theory that this bronze served all four cities of the Seleucid tetrapolis; later studies by H. Seyrig overturned that view, showing the issue was a bilateral alliance coinage of Antioch and its port Seleukeia Pieria. Of the four known types, two display jugate male busts personifying the allied demes; this variety instead borrows Seleukeia’s thunderbolt reverse, while its Zeus obverse echoes Antioch’s civic bronze, visual proof of shared identity and mutual defense at a moment when regional autonomy was negotiated under waning Seleucid royal power. The SE 164 date places the emission shortly after Demetrios II’s accession turmoil, when tight-knit municipal alliances could bolster security and commercial ties along the Orontes littoral.
