Description
Germanic Tribes, 476-500s. AV Solidus Imitating an Issue of Zeno, Uncertain Mint.
Obverse: [blundered legend] 3/4th facing bust of emperor, cuirassed and helmeted; left hand holding spear over shoulder and right shield with a cavalry motif.
Reverse: [blundered legend] Angel facing left holding bejeweled cross; star to the right field.
An unusually handsome imitation of the Germanic tribes in the Migration Period. Seemingly not of Ostrogothic nor Visigothic production, perhaps this solidus is a product of the numismatically less active tribes like the Suevi or Burgundians.
