Description
Myrina, Aeolis. Stephanophoric Tetradrachm, AR, c. 155–145 BC; 16.13 g; 30 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Apollo right. Reverse with ethnic MYPINAIΩN within a wreath (stephanophoric). Struck on the Attic standard on a broad flan typical of the mid-2nd century BC Aeolian series; mint of Myrina. BMC Aeolis, Myrina 12.
Issued in the decades after the Treaty of Apamea (188 BC), this stephanophoric tetradrachm represents the civic silver coinage produced by Aeolian cities under Pergamene hegemony on the Attic standard for regional circulation. The Apollo type reflects local cultic identity, notably the celebrated sanctuary of Apollo at nearby Gryneion, while the wreath reverse typifies the “wreath-bearer” series that preceded the shift to Roman monetary dominance following the bequest of the Attalid kingdom to Rome in 133 BC.
