Description

Antigonus II Gonatas, Tetradrachm, AR, 272–239 BC, Amphipolis; 16.94 g, 31 mm. Obv. Horned head of Pan left, lagobolon over shoulder, set within the central boss of a Macedonian shield. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIΓONOY; Athena Alkidemos advancing left, brandishing thunderbolt and holding shield; control marks in field. Struck at Amphipolis on the Attic standard; style and fabric consistent with the series; cf. SNG München 1074–5.

Antigonus II Gonatas secured the Antigonid kingdom after the Celtic invasion and reasserted Macedonian power in Greece, especially following the Chremonidean War. His Amphipolis tetradrachms with Pan-in-shield and Athena Alkidemos employ established royal iconography associated with Macedonian identity and protection. Hoard evidence and stylistic attributions place these issues among the principal silver outputs of mid-3rd century BC Macedonia, with wide circulation across northern and central Greece.
