Description

Celts in Bohemia or Moravia, 1/8 Stater, gold, 2nd–1st century BC, 0.93 g, 9 mm. Muschel type. Abstract obverse with uncertain motif characteristic of the series; reverse blank. Struck on a small, slightly irregular flan, with flat unstruck reverse as made. Gášpár 146.22. Struck in the late La Tène period within the Celtic cultural zones of Bohemia and Moravia, this fractional gold stater represents the highly abstract iconography and simplified fabric typical of Central European Celtic issues. Such small gold fractions, often with intentionally blank reverses, occur in regional hoards and attest to active exchange networks along the upper Danube and the Amber Road, reflecting the use of gold coinage in transactions among the Boii and neighboring communities during the 2nd–1st centuries BC.
