Description

The silver drachm of Parion in Mysia (circa 500–475 BC) is an early Classical Greek coin notable for its archaic style. Typically struck on a small flan, the obverse features a gorgoneion—the facing head of a Gorgon—used as an apotropaic symbol to ward off evil. Its bold, stylized features reflect the transitional artistry of the late Archaic period.

The reverse usually bears an incuse square divided into compartments, a common design element in early Greek coinage. It is minted in high-quality silver, this drachm served as a regional trade currency along the Propontis. Scarce and historically significant, it offers insight into early Greek numismatic iconography and the maritime economy of Parion.
