Tacitus — Antoninianus, AEQVITAS AVG, Lugdunum

Tacitus — Antoninianus, AEQVITAS AVG, Lugdunum

Lot 3017 · Consigned by Numis-Lens

Starting bid $1.00

Description

Marcus Claudius Tacitus reigned barely nine months, chosen by the senate after Aurelian's murder, and his coinage is compressed into AD 275 and 276. Lugdunum struck this antoninianus with much of its silvering intact. The coin is encapsulated by Classical Coin Grading at AU 58.

The reverse reads AEQVITAS AVG, the fairness of the emperor. Aequitas stands left with scales and cornucopiae, the standard promise of honest weights and honest government.
