Description

A large and impressive Ptolemaic bronze struck under Ptolemy IV Philopator, ruler of Egypt during the later third century BC. The obverse features the bold head of Zeus-Ammon facing right, one of the most iconic images of Ptolemaic coinage, blending the Greek Zeus with the Egyptian god Ammon.

The reverse shows the classic dynastic emblem of Ptolemaic Egypt: an eagle standing left on a thunderbolt, with the royal legend ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, meaning “of King Ptolemy.” A filleted cornucopia appears before the eagle, with a monogram between the legs.

A substantial ancient bronze with strong visual presence, attractive dark green-brown patina, and a commanding 34 mm flan. The Zeus-Ammon portrait remains expressive, and the reverse eagle is well centered and clear. Some surface roughness and marks are present, typical for large Ptolemaic bronzes.
