Description

Struck at Nicomedia in AD 330–335, this bronze nummus shows Constantine II while he was still Caesar under his father, Constantine I. The obverse legend, CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, identifies him as Constantine the Younger, Most Noble Caesar - an imperial heir, not yet an independent Augustus.

The reverse legend, GLORIA EXERCITVS, means “Glory of the Army.” Two soldiers stand facing each other with standards between them, a simple but powerful image of military loyalty and imperial order. Issued during Constantine’s sole rule, the coin belongs to a period when the emperor was presenting his sons as the future of the dynasty, backed by the army and the stability of the Roman state.
