Description

Struck at Sardis in Lydia during the reign of Nerva, AD 96–98. The obverse presents the draped bust of the Roman Senate with ΙΕΡΑ ΣΥΝΚΛΗΤΟΣ, “the Sacred Senate”; the profile and drapery remain visible among brown patina and green surface deposits.

The reverse ethnic ΣΑΡΔΙΑΝΩΝ means “of the Sardians.” Demeter stands left holding ears of grain and a sceptre, a civic image of the grain goddess; her long drapery remains outlined, with the smaller attributes and letters softened on the textured surface.
