Description

Struck at Argos in the Argolid, c. 330–270 B.C. Argos was one of the oldest cities of Greece and Sparta's perennial rival in the Peloponnese. Its silver fractions carry the forepart of a wolf - the animal sacred to Apollo Lykeios, whose sanctuary stood in the Argive agora - and circulated widely across the Peloponnese as everyday silver.

The reverse bears a large Α, the initial of the city, with the control letters Α-Ρ above and a crescent with points upward below, all set within an incuse square - the civic badge of Argos, instantly recognizable to any Greek handling the coin. Concordant with SNG Copenhagen 29, BMC Peloponnesus p. 141, 60, and HGC 5, 667.
