Salonina — Antoninianus, ROMAE AETERNAE, Eastern Mint
Lot B3005 · Consigned by Numis-Lens
Description
Struck at an uncertain eastern mint in 255-256 AD for Cornelia Salonina, wife of Gallienus, during the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus. The issue belongs to the years when Valerian was campaigning in the East against the Sasanian Persians, before his capture in 260.
ROMAE AETERNAE, "to Eternal Rome": Roma is seated left on a shield, holding a spear, and hands a Victory to Gallienus, who stands before her. The type casts the emperor as the recipient of Rome's own victory, a message aimed at an eastern audience watching the Persian frontier.
