Description

Struck at Nicomedia in 324-325 AD, in the months after Constantine defeated Licinius at Chrysopolis and became sole ruler of the Roman world. Nicomedia was Licinius's former capital, and this issue is among the first struck there under Constantine's undivided rule.

PROVIDENTIAE AVGG, "to the Providence of the Augusti", frames a camp gate with two turrets and a star above. The fortified gate was the standard reverse of this period across the eastern mints, presenting the emperors' foresight as the security of the frontier itself.
