Trebonianus Gallus — Antoninianus, PIETAS AVGG, Milan
Lot 3111 · Consigned by Numis-Lens
Description
Struck at Mediolanum (Milan), 251–253 AD, in the short reign of Trebonianus Gallus, one of the many emperors of the third-century crisis. The obverse carries his radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right within the legend IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS AVG. The portrait is the coin's strength, with the rays of the crown, the close-cropped beard and the folds at the shoulder all clear.
The reverse legend PIETAS AVGG (Pietas Augustorum) proclaims the piety of the two Augusti. Pietas stands left, veiled and draped, raising both hands in prayer, with an altar at left: the personified virtue of dutiful devotion to the gods, the state and the family, which every emperor claimed. The figure and legend are crisply struck on a slightly irregular flan.
